GTS's Progress in 2023 Certified by ATMO

GTS's Progress in 2023 Certified by ATMO

In 2022, ATMOsphere responded to the growing demand for a globally recognized quality brand in the natural refrigerants industry, launching a distinctive label that honors the best companies and most innovative products in the sector, and GTS has obtained this important quality certification

Nearly two decades of experience in the sector allows ATMO and its member companies to pioneer the advancement towards more ecological and sustainable solutions, thanks to our products with natural refrigerants.

The process is aimed at manufacturers of these refrigerants, both at the systems and components level, as well as installers and contractors. The company vision, customer satisfaction, the measurable impact of the solutions offered, and investment in training are carefully evaluated.

The approval process is quick and transparent: from 4 to 6 weeks from the registration of interest to final approval, time that may vary depending on the readiness of the applicant in presenting the required data.

Choosing the ATMOsphere label means wanting to highlight your commitment and results in every company presentation and commercial pitch.

It means being able to apply the label to natural refrigeration systems such as refrigerated counters, heat pumps, and refrigerators, deciding independently on the most appropriate dimensions and placement.

Methodological Notes

Atmosphere calculated GTS's GWP in 2023 taking into account various parameters. The acronym GWP stands for "Global Warming Potential," which is an index that measures the ability of a greenhouse gas to trap heat in the atmosphere and thus contribute to the greenhouse effect relative to carbon dioxide (CO2).

The GWP value of a substance is calculated relative to that of CO2, which is assigned a value of 1. When talking about GWP over a 20-year time span (GWP 20 YEARS), we refer to the global warming potential of a given substance measured over a period of 20 years.

This parameter is important because some greenhouse gases have a shorter atmospheric life but are much more effective at trapping heat compared to CO2. Therefore, their GWP can be much higher over a shorter time span. For example, methane has a GWP of about 84 over a 20-year period, which means that over this time frame, one ton of methane has the same greenhouse effect as 84 tons of CO2.

This value changes when we consider a period of 100 years, where the GWP of methane drops to about 25, due to the fact that methane decomposes more quickly in the atmosphere compared to CO2. The use of different time scales for GWP is important in assessing emission reduction policies and short and long-term goals to combat climate change.

GTS's Progress in 2023

In 2023, GTS placed on the market a quantity of hydrocarbons capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions:

  • 3,400,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent, corresponding to the annual energy consumption of 434,000 homes, calculated with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) over 100 years.
  • This represents 15.6% of the Genova metropolitan region's annual emissions for 2020.

  • Equivalent to 14.2 billion kilometers traveled by an average gasoline passenger vehicle.
  • It's as if 757 cars were removed from circulation. Additionally, also in 2023, GTS placed on the market a quantity of hydrocarbons that led to further mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions:
  • 7,000,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent, corresponding to the annual energy consumption of 904,000 homes, this time calculated with a GWP of 20 years.
  • This represents 32.5% of the Genova metropolitan region's annual emissions for 2020.

  • Equivalent to 29.6 billion kilometers traveled by an average gasoline passenger vehicle.
  • It's as if 1,600,000 cars were removed from circulation.

These data reflect the significant impact that the choice of more ecological refrigerants can have on reducing emissions and combating climate change.
